Dioscorea zingiberensis is a traditional medicinal plant mainly grown in China for the production of diosgenin, an important pharmaceutical intermediate for the synthesis of steroid hormones. The rhizomes also produces steroidal saponins as part of a treatment for cardiovascular diseases.
